A popular film around the world, a magical soundtrack and an umbrella shop that became famous despite being pure fantasy… at the time. Jacques Demy’s film inspired 22 year old Jean-Pierre Yvon to create his own brand and Le Véritable Cherbourg umbrella factory in the heart of town in 1986. His son, Charles Yvon, now runs the business under its new name: Parapluie de Cherbourg. The Manche company is recognised as a Living Heritage Company and Charles Yvon won the Entrepreneur Made in France award at the 2021 MIF Expo trade fair. Watch our report from 2019.

There are up to 37 stages involved in hand-making an umbrella. Its craftsmanship has been recognised by the French government with the EPV Living Heritage Company label.

The umbrella has even been sold at the Élysée Palace’s official shop alongside other products made in France since September 2019. The sales help fund the restoration of the president’s residence.

WE WERE CHOSEN TO REPRESENT THE BEST IN FRENCH BUSINESS WORKING IN THE COUNTRY ALONGSIDE OTHER BRANDS. IT'S A SOURCE OF GREAT PRIDE AND A GOLDEN TICKET FOR EXPORTS.

Over 10,000 umbrellas leave the factory every year and 20% are destined for export. The French love the company which has its sights set on going global, especially in Japan.

The Parapluie de Cherbourg has made the umbrella an item with sentimental value that is passed down through the family. But that’s not all…

The company is all about innovation and has filed three patents for its revolutionary bulletproof ParaPactum umbrella that’s taken the French presidents and celebrities by storm.
