I am a British artist living in France. My wife and I moved from Cornwall in 2003. My work comes mainly under the general heading of impressionism although I often stray into the world of abstraction. I love the idea of never telling the full story in a painting, keeping some of it in reserve, and released a little bit at a time. I love colour. I love uncertainty. I love the stuff of day-dreams. A memory of a scene or an event in a painting can be so much more vivid and colourful than a photograph. I started a full-time career in the arts in 1985 on retiring from the information industry (Xerox and Nortel).

The Cornish landscape and the sea provided the inspiration and the workshops of the RBA at the Mall Galleries in London provided the know-how, the techniques and the means of going back and looking at the world around me like a child would, without the filters introduced with maturity and responsibility. I was soon exhibiting at the Mall and elsewhere. Local galleries in Cornwall started the ball rolling, then other galleries in London, the south-east and later beyond. I also tutored at St. Austell and Truro colleges in Cornwall. Having retired a second time, I continue to run classes and workshops at the studio in France, albeit on a smaller scale. The satisfaction of getting students, young and old, fired up with new ideas and ways of expression can be, and is often ... simply priceless.
